Alarmel Velli was born on 14 September 1956 in Chennai. She is one of the main classical dancers who inspected and helped in and universalization of the ‘Pandanallur Style’ in Bharatanatyam. She first debuted at age of 9 ½ at the Indian Institute of Fine Arts in Madras and subsequently was awarded Natya Kala Bhushan Award.
A repository of dance poems was the result of over the years of her in-depth research in Tamil Literature and Sangam Poetry. within the schema of classical Bharatanatyam, she has formulated her own noticeable style. She acquired the skill of Odissi under Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra and also his disciple in Guru Ramani Ranjan Jena.
Apart from executing her skills in many festivals, she is noted as a pristine Indian Classical Dancer to perform at Salzburg Festival in 2015.
She has been bestowed with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2001 and Padma Bhushan in 2004. She also received award -the ‘Chevalier of Arts and Letters award from the Government of France in 2004.
