The Sangeeta Kalanidhi- Sri Nendunuri Krishnamurthy

Overview

One of the most influential Carnatic Vocalist, Sri Nendunuri Krishnamurthy (10 October 1927 – 8 December 2014), was awarded the Madras Music Academy’s Sangeetha Kalanidhi in 1991.

Early life

In the year 1927, at Kothapalli, Pithapuram Taluka, Godavari dt, Sri Krishnamurthy was born to Rama Murthy Panthulu and Vijayalakshmi.

Sri RamaMurthy, was serving Raja of Pithapuram. His mother sang Ashtapadis, Tarangas and the Adhyatma Ramayana kritis which influenced him a lot.

In the year 1940, he received initial training in Violin and vocal at the Maharaja’s Music College at Vizianagaram from Dwaram Narasinga Rao Naidu.Sripada Pinakapani, who was a Carnatic vocalist, guided him to develop his style of music.

Career

Sri Krishnamurthy worked at S.V.College of Music and Dance, Tirupati as Principal; as a Principal at M.R.Government College of Music and Dance, Vizianagaram; as a principal at Government College of Music and Dance, Secunderabad. In 1985, at G.V.R Government college of Music and Dance , Vijayawada, he retired as a principal.

In his performances, we can see that the concepts adhere to tradition. As the essence of Carnatic ragas were captured in his alapanas, he became very famous. Lalgudi Jayaraman was a popular violinist who partnered along with Krishnamurthy to perform as a duo which was admired by listeners.

At Sri Venkateswara University and Nagarjuna University, he was the dean of faculty of the Fine Arts as well as the Chairman of Board of Studies in Music of Sri Venkateswara University and Nagarjuna University. Most of the “Annamacharya” kritis of TTD were contributed by him.

In the year 1976, the title Sangeetha Choodamani was given to “Nedunuri”. In the year 1991, Sangeeta Kalanidhi was conferred to him by the Music Academy, Madras.

Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham and also Asthana Vidwan of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams are the names given to Krishnamurthy garu.

Death

As he was undergoing treatment for lung cancer, Nedunuri Krishnamurthy died on 8 December 2014 at Visakhapatnam at the age of 87.
