Introduction
The dance is very ancient and is used to display stories to the audience which revolves around Ramayana and Mahabharata and Puranas and themes related to Shaivism, Shaktism, and Vaishnavism. It is performed during ceremonies ( even wedding ceremonies) and is deeply associated with Gajan and the sun festivals.
Creating the Performance
In the performance, the music plays a great role. the Dhol, Shehnai, and Dhamsa make the recital lively.
The performers wear brightly colored dhotis with a matching Kurta along with a variety of jewelry. the female performers wear colorful sarees depending on their characters.
The characters are Gods and Goddesses, Demons, and monsters who have a specific costume and appearance. The masks worn by them convey the emotions and nature of the characters. the floor is used for the performance instead of the stage. The audience sits in a circle or semi-circle around them to watch as they perform the magical performance.
