About Dhol Cholom
This is one of the great dances of Manipur. It is performed during Holi. It is the most renowned dance practiced in the North East Indian state of Manipur. This dance is also known as Drum Dance or the Dholak Cholom. This is performed in the spring season that is known as ‘Yaosang’ meaning Spring festival of Holi. This dance involves devotion which is shown in the music as well as the dance. The modulation varies as the performance goes on. It starts softly but ends in a thundering roar at the climax. The Dhol is very significant in all the dances of Manipur states.
Description
This dance is performed on many religious occasions. The performers sing and dance. There are many instruments used along with the Dhol in this particular dance. The dance mostly involves the male members participating in the dance. The men even perform acrobatics along with the drum beats. This dance was first founded by the Meities of the Manipur valley. The Dhol Cholom is an integral part of the Manipuri Sankirtana tradition of Manipur.
Costumes
The participants look very attractive in the colorful costumes and they perform acrobatic skills during the performance.
The Meiteis of the Manipur Valley is the founder of this art form. Dhol Cholom forms a part of the Manipuri Sankirtana tradition of Manipur.
